Ontario begins testing “Autonomoose” cars

The Canadian province of Ontario boldly invited tech companies and automakers to test autonomous vehicles on its roads on January 1st of this year. It’s taken a surprising amount of time, but three groups have accepted the offer.

The first is the University of Waterloo, which is testing a driver-less Lincoln MKZ hybrid cleverly named “Autonomoose.” The Erwin Hymer Group is testing a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, and Blackberry is also working with a Lincoln. All three companies are gathering data about how autonomous cars perform on Canadian roads, which are often icy or covered with snow.

Government officials are concerned Canada has fallen way behind in the race to make driver-less cars a reality. They’ve pledged to invest C$2.95 million (roughly $2.2 million) over the next decade in a bid to catch up to other nations.
